I regularly use my many years old mountain bike to go everywhere in Barcelona. A bike is an extremely cheap, fun and addictive vehicle. At least one friend followed my advice and his bike is nowadays his preferred choice when he has to go somewhere in the city… so give it a try if you can, I’m pretty sure that you’ll not get disappointed

After this short (not devilish) advertisement, there’s a curious repairing procedure I wanted to comment on this post: spoke wrenching. I like to ride my bicycle, but I must admit that I’m rather ignorant when it comes to fixing it, and here is precisely where your bike starts to get more expensive if you don’t stick to basic maintenance practices.

Just a couple of days ago I noticed that my rear wheel was not aligned at all: the wheel was touching one of the brake pads once on every cicle (woobling) and was getting worse as I kept biking :-/ The bike technician told me that my rear wheel spokes were not tight enough and that was causing all the wheel structure to bend.

After wrenching all of them, he managed to correct the woobling, but he explained that the hopping could not be fixed without completely removing all the spokes, readdressing the wheel itself and mounting all the spokes back again… which would translate in a “not-good-for-my-budget” amount of money and it wasn’t a critical repair anyway. So afterwards I bought a 6€ spoke whench tool and did the same procedure the bike tech guy did, this time with my front wheel. It was not easy, but eventually got it right and in addition I learnt a new and useful thing which could be also useful (and cost-saving) to you someday… isn’t blogging and biking cool ?

Part de la feina que havia de fer al 3GSM consistia en escanejar les xarxes inalàmbriques que hi havia en rang (podien arribar fins les 300 sense moure’s massa). De totes aquestes xarxes calia veure quines eren legítimes i quines s’havien muntat sense permís exprés de l’organització.

Com que els portàtils dels que disposàvem corrien windows, em van venir al cap unes tools que vaig descobrir a LISA’05: Wireless Weapons of Mass Destruction for Windows, concretament la utilitat ssidscan.vbs que suposadament retorna un llistat d’SSID’s per command line per tal de poder parsejar els resultats a posteriori… he dit suposadament, aquest és el resultat:

Com veieu, per un bug documentat (i pel que sembla, no arreglat encara (!!!) no mostra correctament el nom dels SSIDs real: lletres addicionals, altres que falten, caràcters estranys en alguns casos…

Doncs si, he estat per allà dins dos dies lluïnt un passi on posa “MANTENIMIENTO”, i es que juntament amb més gent m’han contractat temporalment per oferir suport a la xarxa wifi de la fira… però primer anem al gra:

OLPC: Estaven allà mateix per tastar-los tant com volguessis, tot i que no disposava de massa temps per remenar-lo (feina), ha estat suficient per fer-me’n les primeres impressions… és una joguina molt interessant. Defectes trobats a primera vista:

1. Pesa ! La bateria de NiMH fa que el pes del portàtil sigui considerable per un nen, imho.
2. Les tecles de goma són molt petites. Estan preparades per nens de fins a ~12 anys, així que si en volieu comprar un per treballar cómodament, oblideu-vos ! (nota: no és un defecte per nens de < =12 anys!)

Per la resta és un gadget fantàstic, genial per menuts i també indicat per geeks més crescuts (té una hackability bastant alta)

Playstation 3: Tot review negatiu que trobeu a internet és correcte… quin fiasco de màquina. No sóc cap expert en videojocs, però el Ridge Racer que estava corrent es podia confondre perfectament amb qualsevol joc de consola d’avui en dia o de la generació anterior… cap diferència :-! La consola físicament molt grossa (la imaginava més petita). Segueixo pensant que per posar-hi linux, fer càlcul científic intens (cell) i com a reproductor domèstic Blueray pot ser genial, però com a consola de videojocs no li veig massa futur.

M’ha agradat veure que en la resta de fira es veu GNU/Linux en força stands. Es nota l’entrada cada cop més acceptada per part dels fabricants d’aquest SO al món del mòbils… linux going mobile at last

Altres stands interessants vistos de passada són Freescale i ARM i nvidia (amb unes plaques de desenvolupament impressionants)… disculpeu la brevetat del post però la feina és la feina ;_) Si voleu preguntar alguna cosa i me’n recordo, endavant !
